VPN - locked out

I had VPN set up in the Android Settings. Everything was fine until I forgot the VPN section access pwd.

Once I have done that a few times I've got a message saying that the creds storage will be deleted. I was OK with that as I can readd the VPN. But now I am asked to confirm the PIN/ password. What pwd??

I simply cannot get past that screen. What is going on? I tried to go to Location and Security to delete the store creds again, but I see that the Location and Security sections are separate and the Security section does not have the option of clearing everything.

I am now locked out of the VPN section and I need it. 

Help!
